How it works and what to know

Opens Mediator Debt Solutions’ short intake form. Mediator Debt Solutions connects you with licensed third-party debt relief providers and does not provide debt relief services itself. Programs are available in select states, fees vary by location and results are not guaranteed. Debt settlement can hurt your credit and may lead to collections or lawsuits.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

What happens in a coverage review?

We start by learning about your family, goals and current coverage. Then we explain your options in plain language, and only when it makes sense do we help you take a next step. There is no obligation to buy anything.

Does a consultation cost anything?

No. Booking a consultation or taking the coverage quiz is free.

I’ve changed jobs a few times. How do I find an old 401(k)?

Start with the 401(k) finder. It walks you through where to look, including your former employers’ plan administrators and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Retirement Savings Lost and Found database, and gives you a checklist you can print.

Who is Mediator Debt Solutions?

Mediator Debt Solutions is a California-based company, and an independent partner of LHM Agency and PHP, that connects people with licensed third-party debt relief providers. It works with unsecured debt like credit cards, medical bills and student loans. LHM Agency doesn’t provide debt relief services. We introduce you to our partner. See the Debt solutions section on the Services page for how the program works and what to know before enrolling.

Do I need a license to join the team?

No. Our licensing coordinator helps new agents choose a licensing path and stay on track through study, the state exam and appointments. Earnings depend on individual effort and are not guaranteed.

The Rule of 72

A quick way to estimate how long it may take money to double: divide 72 by the yearly rate of return. At 8%, that’s about 9 years.

How long until it doubles?

About 12 years At 6%, $10,000 grows to about $20,000.

  • Taxable: you pay tax on growth each year.

Term vs. permanent

Term covers a set number of years at a lower cost. Permanent lasts for life and can build cash value, at a higher cost.

Services

Protection for your family, a plan for your retirement, and a path through debt.

What is life insurance?

Life insurance is a contract. You pay premiums to an insurance company, and in exchange it pays a lump sum to your chosen beneficiaries when you pass away. That money can cover funeral costs, outstanding debts and everyday living expenses.

Term insurance

  • Lowest cost for the amount of coverage
  • Temporary: typically 10 to 30 years

Return of premium rider

  • Refunds premiums paid if you outlive the term and meet policy conditions
  • Temporary: typically 20 to 30 years
  • Costs more than standard term

Permanent insurance

  • Coverage for your whole life
  • Builds cash value*
  • Costs more than term

Common reasons people buy it

  • Protect family income
  • Pay off debts and other liabilities
  • Fund a child’s education
  • Create an emergency cash fund
  • Build income for retirement
Living benefits

Use your policy while you’re still living.

Living benefits let you use part of your life insurance death benefit early, if you meet certain conditions, instead of waiting for a claim to be paid to your beneficiaries after you pass away. That can help you pay for care, treatment or everyday expenses when it matters most.

Chronic illness

May apply if you can’t do certain basic daily activities on your own, such as eating, bathing, dressing, moving around, using the toilet or staying continent, or if you have a severe cognitive impairment.

Terminal illness

May apply when a doctor certifies that you have a limited life expectancy. The time frame is often 12 to 24 months, depending on the carrier.

Critical illness

May apply after a diagnosis of a specific serious condition, such as a stroke, heart attack, invasive cancer, kidney failure, organ transplant or paralysis. The list of qualifying conditions varies by carrier.

Included on most policies

Most of the carriers we work with include living benefits at no additional cost, based on approval. Ask us which options include them and what each one covers.

Living benefits are accelerated death benefits. Availability, qualifying conditions, time frames and terms vary by carrier, policy and state, and all benefits are subject to approval. Using a living benefit reduces the death benefit paid to your beneficiaries and may have tax consequences or affect eligibility for government benefits, so talk with a tax professional. Living benefits are not a substitute for health insurance or long-term care insurance.

*Cash value availability and growth vary by policy type and carrier. Loans and withdrawals can reduce the death benefit and may have tax consequences. Premiums, features and availability depend on your age, health and state.

Retirement and annuities

Whether you have an old 401(k) sitting at a past employer or you’re deciding how to turn savings into income, we walk through each option and what it means for taxes, access and risk.

When you leave a job, you generally can

  • Leave the money in your former employer’s plan, if the plan allows it
  • Roll it into an IRA
  • Roll it into your new employer’s plan, if the plan accepts rollovers
  • Cash it out, which can trigger taxes and early-withdrawal penalties

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company that can provide guaranteed income later in exchange for a deposit now. Features, fees, surrender periods and guarantees differ by product, so we compare them side by side with you.

Annuity guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Annuities are not bank deposits and are not FDIC-insured.

Debt solutions

If debt is weighing on your finances, you don’t have to sort it out alone. LHM Agency and PHP partner with Mediator Debt Solutions, a California-based company that connects people with licensed third-party debt relief providers.

Who they are: Mediator Debt Solutions works with people dealing with unsecured debt such as credit cards, medical bills and student loans. The programs it connects people with are built around debt settlement, where a provider negotiates with your creditors to try to lower what you owe. LHM Agency doesn’t provide debt relief itself. We introduce you to our partner.

Who it may be a fit for

  • You’re dealing with a financial hardship, such as a lost job or income, a medical issue or another major setback.
  • You have at least $7,500 in unsecured debt, meaning debt with no collateral behind it, like credit cards or medical bills.
  • You can make regular monthly payments into the program.
  • You live in a state where the programs are offered. Availability varies by state, so confirm yours during your consultation.

How the program works

  1. Talk to a debt specialist. They learn about your situation and goals, then you set a monthly deposit based on your budget and the debt you enroll.
  2. Make monthly deposits. You open a savings account in your own name, under your control, and send your program deposits there.
  3. Stop using the enrolled credit lines.Negotiators take over communication with your creditors on those accounts.
  4. Negotiation begins. They work to settle accounts for less than the full balance, using the money you’ve saved, and decide which accounts to settle first.
  5. Track your progress. You get online account access and updates from client service representatives.
  6. Approve each settlement. When a creditor agrees, you approve it, the money in your account pays it, and that debt is considered resolved.

Programs generally last between 12 and 48 months, depending on your debt and circumstances.

Know before you enroll

  • Debt settlement can hurt your credit and may lead to collections or lawsuits from creditors.
  • Balances can grow from fees and interest while you’re in the program.
  • Some debts aren’t eligible, and some creditors won’t negotiate.
  • Fees vary by location and results are not guaranteed. Read all program terms carefully before you enroll.
  • Neither Mediator Debt Solutions nor LHM Agency pays your debts or your creditors, or gives tax, legal, bankruptcy or credit repair advice. Consider talking with a tax professional about tax effects and a bankruptcy attorney about your options.

Mediator Debt Solutions is an independent partner of LHM Agency and PHP. It connects consumers with licensed third-party debt relief providers and does not provide debt relief services itself. Programs are available in select states.

Two official places to search

Both are U.S. government websites. Searching them is the fastest way to see whether an old plan is out there.

Retirement Savings Lost and Found

The U.S. Department of Labor’s database of private-employer and union retirement plans linked to your Social Security number. You’ll verify your identity through Login.gov first.

PBGC unclaimed benefits

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation holds benefits for people who weren’t paid when a private-sector plan ended. You’ll enter your last name and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

LHM Agency is not affiliated with either agency. Enter personal information only on the official sites linked here, and be cautious of anyone who asks you to pay to find your retirement benefits.

How it works

  1. Tell us where you’ve worked.List past employers that offered a 401(k) or similar plan.
  2. Get your search checklist. It points you to where to look, starting with your former employer’s plan administrator, and you can print or save it.
  3. Review options together.Leave it, roll it over, or move it, with the tax and access tradeoffs explained.

LHM Agency does not hold your funds. Rollovers can have tax consequences, and we don’t provide tax or legal advice. Speak with a qualified tax professional about your situation.

How many past employers offered a 401(k)?
Do you know who administers the old plan?

That’s the company that sends the statements.

Which employers?

Optional. Company names and rough years help us tailor your review.

Where should we send your checklist?

A licensed professional may follow up about your options.
